Far and Away

Far and Away was a surprisingly amazing movie. At first i was completely dreading spending two and a half hours watching this movie but I ended up finding it extremely enjoyable. I even went out and bought it. Not only is the movie extremely eye opening but it is also very entertaining for all audiences. there was action, love, and suspense.

These two people were moving to America for two completely different reasons but at the same time for the same intent; to be free. Joseph was out with the intent to find land as his was taken away from him and his family after his father past away due to not paying the rent. They even burnt his house down.. Shannon was rich and escaping from the strict life she lived and for a modern new life.
There were many challenges that these two faced in there journey to America. For one it was hard for the to of them to get long at first because of their different backgrounds. Joseph came from a poor family who works hard labor for what they have and Shannon comes from a rich family where she has never even done laundry before. They each had their own struggles including being discriminated against, lack of money, shelter, and many dangers along the way.
Despite these challenges they stuck together through it all and worked as a team, protecting each other and being there for one another even though it was not what they had expected of America. Joseph used his talent of fighting to make him money, and Shannon stuck it out plucking chickens to get by. Joseph could have gone a long way with his fighting but he was more concerned about Shannon's safety than winning the fight. He was always looking out for her no matter what the costs.
In the end. the two prevailed, each getting exactly what they always dreamed of.

question: What do you think the two of them took out of this struggling yet amazing adventure in America?

  1. I believe that the two of them learned to live for themselves yet find a sincere love for one another all at the same time. They struggled with adapting to the way things are run in America, yet the support they gave to one another made it easier to adapt. I think Shannon especially learned from being in America that she doesn't need to rely on her parents so much and she can make a living and do household chores on her own, she grew more than Joseph in that reguard because he already knew more of what was like to live on his own. He learned to follow his heart and his dreams will come true, which is what happened since he eventually got his land.
Together they made for a good pair in their adventure in America because if anything let each of them down, they learned to cope and solve their problems together!

  2. The struggles faced by Shannon and Joseph both made then stronger people. Joseph realized that he needed to be true to himself through his experiences with Mr. Kelly. Shannon found out the value of hard work when she was forced to do her own laundry and pluck chickens for a living. Those experiences made them appreciate their land when they finally archived their goal.

  3. I agree with both Katie and Jordan. I think they gained an appreciation for every little thing they had and Shannon especially stopped taking things for granted. I also think they both had a reality check and realized that nowhere is going to be perfect but that they make each other happy. I also believe they learned that not everyone can be trusted no matter how sincere they seem. This may seem like a bad thing but sometimes being skeptical is good.

  4. In the case of Shannon, I think she learned that she is not superior to a lower status person, such as Joseph Donnelly. In a sense, I think she learned that every person, whether white collar or blue collar, are equal in terms of individual rights and opportunity. The latter especially seems to be true when she allows Donnelly to slam the flag into the ground during the Oklahoma land rush, perhaps implying that he deserves the land as much as herself.

And in the case of Donnelly, I think he learned to never stop believing in himself. For instance, when he is working for the railroad he seems to have lost some of his motivation to chase his dream. In short, he seems to have given up on his dream. Yet, once he notices the several people traveling to Oklahoma alongside his lodging train, he gets his motivation back. So I believe the most crucial lesson for Joseph is that he learned to never stop chasing his dream.
